Halloween-ed out

Halloween is my least favorite holiday. It’s totally pointless, beyond providing the kids a good time and bonuses for the CEO’s of candy companies. And that’s all fine, for ONE day, but Halloween always manages to stretch itself out over about 5. By the time it’s actually Halloween, I’M SO SICK OF IT! And here we are. The school and evening festivities in front of me, and I’d rather spend the day in bed. Of course, I don’t feel well, which contributes. But really, Halloween is pretty lame as far as holidays go.

That being said, here are some pictures of the pumpkin carving party Nate hosted Monday night.

There were about 20 pumpkins in all, spread out among 15 families. I’ve been a scrooge the past three years of this event and haven’t carved one myself, but the girls carved their own this year and there wasn’t any blood! A definite success in my book.

I finished the Esther hat for my friend Lisa.

It’s such a pretty pattern. I hope she likes it. I knit this one out of Cascade 220, and as far as I can recall, it’s my first time using this yarn. It was fine to knit with, and it’s nice and soft for straight wool, but incredibly splitty on the crocheted edging.

So, does that mean you’re taking the girls out trick or treating, or staying home to work the door?

The pumpkin carvings look fantastic, and the hat is very cool.

Those pumpkins are great. I like Halloween, only because I like candy corn, jack-o-lanterns and pumpkin flavored goodies 🙂 This is our first year being home at the condo during trick or treating, I can’t wait to see if we have any visitors. I used to love handing out candy at home.

That hat is really super. Do you think it would work in a wool/silk blend? My concern is it might not be “grippy” enough with a more drapey yarn perhaps.

Hi Laura. I’m totally with you on the Hallowe’en thing … waaaaaay over it! I work at an elementary school and there are definite consequences in the days following Hallowe’en festivities every year. The poor kids are just ‘done’ on many levels!

I love the hat … you have such a generous heart … always mak’in someth’in for someone 😀

This was our most laid-back Halloween in five years, yet I am more tired. Since I don’t drive, I usually have the stress of figuring out how to get the kids to various events and trying to come up with cheap yet fun costumes. This year the costumes were simple (pumpkin t-shirts) and there was only one event outside of the trick-or-treating. However, my husband waited until the last minute to buy yarn, so I’ve spent the past two days knitting pumpkin hats. My hands are throbbing! So I guess I am Halloween-ed out, too. At least the kids each have a winter hat now :-).

our halloween was low key but nice. We carved 1 pumpkin, went trick-or-treating just on our street so it took about 10 minutes and stopped at houses where we know people so we got to chat with neighbors and they made a fuss over the little ones, we made a fuss when they came to our house, turned out the lights when the candy was gone, and that was it. We have a fun book of easy costumes to make so it doesn’t get too expensive for us. The girls’ school collects candy tomorrow and sends it off to Uganda, so we could even get rid of most of the incoming if we wanted to. (I’ll sort through first and keep my favorites!)

Your Halloween entry cracked me up. Have you read my blog thise week. I love Halloween…don’t like Christmas. I mean I love the meaning of Christmas but there are so many expectations and requirements. Halloween is just for fun and everything nice is a bonus. I even gave my postman and my lawnmowers candy. All that said…I’m glad it’s over.

Laura, I finished the Esther Williams Hat that I was asking you about, I put a photo on my blog if you would like to see it.

Thanks for a great pattern, it was really fun (and fast!) 🙂
