Scrambling

I’m in trouble. I need to get Olivia’s doll done, and I haven’t been working on it. I haven’t been knitting much of anything. It’s been busy. SO, Here’s a picture of our christmas stockings.

I first learned to knit in September of 2000. My learning project was a garter stitch hat in the round on double pointed needles. I did a few of those, then as Christmas approached, I called some yarn stores looking for stocking patterns. That’s when I discovered Cher at Columbine Yarns. She sold me a pattern and yarn, gave me enough instruction to get me started, and told me to come in for help when I got stuck. That first year, the stocking on the far left, and the one in the middle were created. The following year, I made the two blues. Last year, I needed one more, and it’s my favorite.

Either last year, or the year before (I don’t recall), I made one for mom, but I don’t have a picture of that. It was light green, and had a dark green, horse head silhouette on it. Stockings are fun. There’s so much you can do with them.

Now I need to get cracking on Olivia’s doll. The kids are on Winter Vacation from school, so if I’m going to get anything done on it today, I’ve got to lock myself in my room. I’m not feeling very optimistic.

I feel your pain. I’ve only got two kids so I can’t really know what it’s like for your with three.
What I can tell you is that it’s 10:45 and I’m still in my PJs and haven’t had breakfast yet. When does school start again?

Having seen all your stockings up close, they are nice, but that is my favorite, too. Maybe because I remember witnessing its beautiiful creation! I am tempted to make stockings for us…we have a Rudolph theme in this house and currently have strange stockings including one weird Moose stocking that Art got from his Mother last Christmas – Sorry, Rudolph was NOT a moose! I am tempted to take on the challenge, having seen the Red-Nosed Reindeer stockings on the Peace Fleece website. However, you are the Queen of pretty handmade stockings. Maybe I’ll leave well enough alone!

I was wondering which company made your stocking pattern?

And where did you learn those stitch patterns?

I want to knit stockings for my family next year and I think that yours are lovely.

Most of the stitch patterns I used were made up. On the cabled stocking, I used a basketweave cable pattern from a Harmony Stitch Guide, and the maroon pattern I found in an old, funky stitch pattern book I bought at an antique store. It was wrong though, so I had to re-work it, and it was so confusing, by the time I got it right, I wasn’t even sure what I’d done.

On the dark blue one, I did the snowflakes and trees in white, but ran a thick silver thread with it to shimmer a bit.

Graph paper is great for making up color patterns. I think I still have the horse, trees, and snowmen in my graph paper pad. I could scan and post them after Christmas if anyone wants them.

The snowflake pattern I adapted from a snowflake graph in the back of the Big Book of Knitting by Katharina Buss

Thanks a lot for all the info. I can’t wait to get started making them for next year!
