Oy, birthdays

My birthday ended up turning into a 2 1/2 day junkfoodfest. I’m anxious to have a good, healthy eating day again, because I don’t feel good when I eat like that, despite how enjoyable it is. So, I’ve had my Strawberry-Orange-Fiber shake and vitamins this morning, with 2 glasses of water down so far.

And I remember what I wanted to talk about yesterday! I’m confident that I’m not the first one to have thought of this, but it occurred to me a couple days ago that I could possibly both knit and exercise at the same time on a recumbent exercise bike.

Have any of you done this?

My in-laws have one, so I hauled Mary’s Koigu glove-in-progress over there last night to have a go.

It works.

HA-hahahahahhhhhh!

I think I could easily work out an hour a day if I’m knitting! And I was looking for a new thing to do because walking isn’t always getting my heart rate up where I’d like it anymore. I still weigh too much to jog, and if I continue my upper body weights a couple times a week…. I don’t see a down side to this.

What are your thoughts?

Moving on, I’ve cast on for the second mitt and I’m probably still not going to have enough yarn to finish off the thumbs, so I’m going to go back to Weaving Works to look for a coordinating color that’ll blend more than contrast.

I find that when I try to do that, I don’t bike fast enough. Then my trainer told me off for using the recumbent bike and said I should use the sitting-up bike instead because you burn more calories.

That said, he also said and I agree that if it’s knitting-while-biking on the recumbent, or nothing, knitting-on-the-recumbent is definitely better than nothing! So I say – go for it!! 🙂

I don’t like the upright bikes because they’re uncomfortable to sit on, which makes me less likely to do it. Plus, they’re hard on my low back. And extremely boring.

I was worried about not biking fast enough as you said, but I think if you had some good, upbeat music going and were working on a simple enough project it’d help.

knitting and exercise in one go at it? I say that’s an awesome idea! Now…..we need to figure out a way to be online and typing and knitting at the same time. I could get SO MUCH done that way! :o) I hope you find some Koigu that’s a close match. Good luck!

    Happy belated birthday!

How come you think you’re too heavy to jog? Is it because of problems with your back and/or knees?

I feel very jealous that you can go out and buy Koigu. None of the yarn shops around carry it. I’d have to go pretty far.

Knitting and working out? You, girl, have found the holy grail. Really, almost like the foutain of youth.

Sounds like fun – now, if we could only do that (exercise and knit) in front of the computer… maybe talk into it?… We’ll be set. 🙂

I have one, and yes I can knit while I bike – and it’s better than knitting and not biking – my goal is to get on it regularly and perhaps mix in some intervals with some more strenuous biking without knitting, and then knitting in the slower spots – i do have some handy water botter holders to hang on to the knitting – I highly recommend it!
