50s day

It’s 50s day at school today. Tonight, they’re having a Halloween sock hop. A few weeks ago, Veronica’s teacher held an after school workshop to show us how to make poodle skirts. I made one for Liv, Veronica, and two of Liv’s friends. Abby didn’t want one.

Well, now Abby wants one, and I kind of do, too. Though I’ll probably look like an elephant. It’ll be fun.

So once the fabric store opens, I’m off buy some felt!

I’ve been working on Abby’s legwarmers, out of the tweedy handspun I made for her this summer.

The first try, they were stiff and rough, so I ripped it out, downed the stitch count, and used a larger needle size. Now they’re really nice. I love the tweedy yarn. I totally want to blend my romney with tweedy bits for my sweater.

My girls had ‘Dynamic Duo’ day at school a few weeks back for friendship week. They dress up in pairs as salt and pepper, tweedle dum and tweedle dee, etc. Mary went with a friend as Rhett and Scarlett. It’s fun so long as you don’t have a bomb threat that same day so everyone has to sit out in the tennis courts looking like morons with news helicopters flying overhead.

    LOVE the tweedy yarn.

Those skirts are awesome. And, you have the most beautiful children!

What do the boys wear to be 50’s style? Do they all have slicked-back hair (or is that the 60s?)?

    The legwarmers are cute, too.

Have you ever made armwarmers that don’t hook over the thumb? You seem fairly skilled in the legwarmer arena so I wonder if you think something similar would work on the forearm – wrist to elbow?

The skirts are great! They do tend to look best on skinny girls, though. Have fun sewing!

They’ve been having a ’50s day at my kids’ school for the past three years. I sent my son to school in dark jeans with a wide cuff and a white t-shirt with a deck of cards rolled up in the sleeve. We didn’t do the slicked-back hair because slicking back an afro ain’t easy :-).

I’ve been meaning to make circle skirts for ages. Maybe I’ll get around to it before all my daughters leave for college!
