Tell me about Silk Merino

I take it from my searching on the internet that Plymouth doesn’t make Silk Merino anymore. Does anyone know about this yarn? I’ve been wanting to make this…

for Nate for some time. (Here’s the link). It calls for Plymouth’s Silk Merino. Unfortunately, the gauge given in the pattern is over a ribbed stitch, so I’m going to have to do some swatching to find out what weight of yarn we’re talking about, unless someone out there can help me….

I don’t have much to report. I’ve finished two skeins worth of Noro on the Shoalwater Shawl. I have stopped and taken it off the needles to see if I want to continue. It just isn’t working up the way I want. This pattern is one of the few I’ve ever seen where I wanted EXACTLY what was pictured. Usually when I see a pattern, there are any number of changes I want to make. But this one is different. I want it exact, and I can’t have it. It kills me. So I’m trying to find a happy compromise, and I’m just not sure if Noro’s Silk Garden is it.

So I guess I have another yarn question- can anyone suggest a good yarn, fingering through DK weight, that has long bands of varying blues? That is hopefully not too expensive? If not, I may just have to try my hand at dyeing after all. Now where did I put that book?

The other option would be to buy a bunch of blue rovings and spin it myself. I actually really like this option. If only I had a spinning wheel. But you don’t want to hear about that again. That reminds me… my consolation prize (the juicer) is due to arrive via UPS today. There’s some happy news!

I didn’t see it listed on the Plymouth Yarn website. Perhaps you might call them and see if they have more info? They have their contact info on line at http://www.plymouthyarn.com/index.php?nav=Contact.main

Also, I found a few single balls of it listed on eBay with the following info:
    30% mulberry silk/70% merino wool
    Made in Italy
    Worsted weight
    109 yds
    18 st/24 rows = 4″ on US# 7

    Hope that helps!

Yes, they have quite a few balls available on ebay – the one auction I looked at had 21 of a dark olive color.

What about Koigu? They have a lot of nice blue colors.

Hi Laura, the man sweater is pretty, I hope you will find yarn that suits!
For your shawl do you know the Country silk yarn from http://www.fiddlesticksknitting.com
the bands of colors are actually quite short but I think the waves will show and this yarn is really really beautiful, I tried the wine colorway (the colors were lighter than on my screen) for a shawl and I love it! and the shawl drapes very nicely too.
and with one skein I did my gauge swatch, my shawl and a small scarf (branching out from knitty)!
    happy knitting!

This one is offered in both a lace and a DK weight, 1000m to the half pound for the first and 400m for the other.
