And what a nice visit it was

My mom came into town, semi unexpectedly on Thurday evening. She bought a 1953 Bentley from Whidbey Island, and came to pick it up.

We had a fabulous time on the ferry,

it has been gorgeous weather here, and she left Sunday morning.

On Saturday, Veronica, mom and I went to Skeins! where mom bought 8 of these….

(It’s King Tut 100% mercerized cotton, in a stunning steel grey blue)

So that I can make her this…..

I am both completely excited and completely terrified. Sweaters are expensive, and if I mess up a pattern with yarn that I purchase, it’s highly annoying. If I mess up with yarn that someone else purchases, it is totally uncool. I’m not worried about my ability to complete a nice sweater, I’m worried about fit. My mom lives in Central Oregon, so I can’t try it on her frequently. However, now that I’m thinking in type, (as opposed to out loud, you see), most of my relatives in the area (all are on my husband’s side) are a size 6, like she is. I’m the only mammoth in the family. I wonder if I could use one of them as my mannequin? Hmmmm. Optimism is returning…..

So, isn’t it pretty? It is in a british magazine, which means I get to knit in centimeters and use meters of yarn, instead of using inches and yards. It’ll be a first for me. I couldn’t find a functioning website for the magazine, so I scanned in the cover, in case anyone is interested. (UPDATE!- their website is up, here’s the magazine link. I don’t know about back issues).

I am really excited about starting this sweater. Maybe I’ll be posting another swatch tomorrow?!

i have that magazine too, i bought it a while ago it has some lovely designs in it , good luck with the jumper, i would not mind knitting myself but i have quite a few wips at the moment,

Such excitement! I love old cars, wish I could go on the ferry, and that color of yarn is one of my favorites!! Just take alot of measurements on your mom, so you can check your progress against those. Like shoulder to wrist, base of throat to waist, etc., besides the usual measurements.Hey, you could even get your mom to lay down on a large piece of paper and outline her as a graphic! Have a good resource for finishing and take a deep breath and have lots of fun!

That is a gorgeous sweater! Although I don’t envy you knitting with the mercerized cotton. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I’m sending you all my not-messing-up vibes!

Maggie- I hear you on the cotton thing! Thanks for the vibes. I’ve already come to terms with the fact that I can only work on it when I have plenty of time, am relaxed, and emotionally at peace with the world. If I were a drinker, I’d include a glass of wine in that happy picture. The only cotton experience I have thus far is the diagonal bucket hat. Uniformity of stitches wasn’t much of an issue on that one, so I have my work cut out for me.

Jenny- the lady at the yarns store said that the best thing to do is to have my mom measure the heck out of one of her sweaters she likes the fit of, so I sent her home with that assignment. It’d be really handy if the reference sweater happens to be cotton, ribbed, and cabled. Wouldn’t it? (While we’re at it, how ’bout making it british too?)

OOooo! That is beautiful– ALL are beautiful! I’m looking forward to that swatch!

lovely looking yarn there. do you know where this magazine can be found in the usa (or online even)? i havn’t been able to find it anywhere and it looks like it has some nice things in it.

  7. Laura Says:

I don’t know where you can find it. My hubby bought it at the beginning of this year. The website I linked yesterday is the only official webiste for the publisher. You can find their contact info there. Here is their email address: [email>pubs@thegmcgroup.com[/email> That’d at least be a free way to find out about it. Good luck!

thuy, they sell that mag in the borders in livingston, new jersey. they might have it wherever you live.

laura, i am currently knitting two projects with king tut, and i have to say it’s really fabulous yarn. make sure you use a slippery needle like the shiny susan needles or bamboos.

    athena 🙂

  9. Laura Says:

Yup, the husband just said that Borders was where he bought it. This pattern is in the February/March issue. I think AI read that it is issue #3.

Athena- I’m glad you’re liking the yarn. I’m using a bamboo #3 & #6 circular. Are you having any trouble with the fabric being too see through?
