Sweater me, baby

Hmmm, depending on how you look at it, the trip to the craft store was a success. I successfully avoided making an expensive grommet gun purchase that I might later have regretted, and I picked up some fun stuff.

There are some little snaps in there, some big snaps, some embroidery floss, a magnetized pin holder, a backup retractable tape measure (because the one I already own is a hot item with the girls, and frequently goes missing), and some excellent little seed beads that may or may not look cool as highlights in doll eyes. I also got a big $5 coupon for a future visit! Ooh, ahhh.

So I talked with a couple nice ladies in the fabric store, and they said that they would definitely go with the felted yarnovers over the grommets. Humphh.

Does anyone out there have an opinion as to how big these yarnovers should be? I am trying to decide between double, triple, and quadruple yarnovers. Should the holes be just barely big enough for the i-cord to pass through, or huge to give it room to move around freely? (Oops, I just realized that I haven’t told you what I’m wanting to do yet. I am putting a drawstring around the top of the backpack, a few inches down from the top, to draw the sides in when the flap is down. Make sense?)

Moving on…… The doll, (who really needs a name. I’m thinking about Meredith), is now only half naked. I knit her a sweater yesterday.

I intend to work up some cute, striped pants today, and I’m thinking about doing some embroidery on her sweater. What do you think? Does the sweater need some embellishment?

Oh yeah, embroidery on the sweater, all the way. You’ve already spent all the time giving her the perfect hairdo and perfect eyebrows, what’s a little sweater design? Can’t wait to see her lower half!

Question, how quickly does she knit up (apart from all the little embellishment details)?

Not long at all. I had the body completed and stuffed in two days. I think it could be easily done in one. I was really busy those two days, so I was squeezing knitting time in between a hundred other things. I also kept making silly mistakes and frogging back.

She definitely needs some sparkle on her jumper, to match her stripy trousers!!

My experience with felting is nil – so temper my comment with that, please – but just wanted to say, if you really want the grommets, don’t count them out. Knowing nothing about them, I just put some in a bag. I was disappointed with the construction of the grommets (what I finally found were “eyelets” from the craft section, I’d recommend trying to find the actual heavy duty hardware store-style ones), but was really pleased with the end result.

The one thing you want to do when felting an item with y/o’s in it, is to run something through the y/o’s to keep them from felting shut. Heavy string, leather laces, probably even fabric strips would work. You could also braid or twist some 100% acrylic yarn and run it through the y/o’s as this yarn will not felt. I would think you would want the y/o’s big enough that the i-cord did not have to be pulled hard, but not so loose it moved too freely.

Laura Marie- your bag looks fab.

Bliss- What a great idea! Thanks! The last time I felted yarnovers I just poked my finger through the holes at intervals during the fetling process. I ended up with very inconsistent holes.

I think Meredith is a great name for her! And she is just too lovely. As for the sweater, embellishments all the way, depending on how stripey the pants really are. If they are extremely stripey, then a nice solid sweater would do nicely. But then, I’m not very flashy. Meredith may be a bit bolder than me. :o)
